The Nowshehra Jadid police killed five robbers in an ‘encounter’ near Naurang village.

BAHAWALPUR: The Nowshehra Jadid police claimed on Monday to have killed five robbers in an ‘encounter’ near Naurang village.

The deceased have been identified as Muhammad Siddique alias Dodo, Saeed alias Sheado, Bashir Ahmed, Karim Bakhsh and Muhammad Rafiq. They were among the six under-trial prisoners who had escaped from police custody last month in Lodhran district while being shifted in a prison van from Multan courts to New Central Jail, Bahawalpur.

They snatched official weapons, opened fire, killing one of their own accomplices and injuring three police officials and two passers-by.

The Qureshiwala police had booked them in several criminal cases after their escape.

 

Police spokesman Jam Sajid said the Nowehehra Jadid police received information that about nine armed robbers had allegedly snatched a motorcycle from a man. He said a team conducted a raid and on seeing the police the suspects opened fire. He claimed that during a crossfire, the suspects were killed in firing by their accomplices while four others manged their escape.

He said police recovered two motorcycles, as many kalashnikovs, three pistols and illegal arms from their possession. Jam Sajid said that the deceased were wanted in a number of cases of murder, dacoity and robbery in Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan and other parts of south Punjab.
